News Archive CFS Cadets embrace the Anzac spirit 25/4/09
Cadets from the Morphett Vale Country Fire Service (CFS) joined members
of other CFS brigades and young representatives from various local
volunteer organisations to brave the cold and wet conditions to launch
Anzac Day activities at the Morphett Vale Anzac Eve Youth Vigil
overnight.
About 150 young people took part in the vigil at the City of Onkaparinga
Memorial Gardens on the corner of Flaxmill Road and Main South Road at
Morphett Vale from which began at 6pm and concluded with the dawn
service this morning.
The chairman of the Anzac Youth Vigil in the South, Brian Holecek, said
the significance of this event is reflected through the enthusiasm of an
increasing number of young South Australians who have become involved
over the past seven years.
“The legacy of Anzac is symbolic of a struggle, strength, mateship and
hope which has helped to define us as a nation, since our brave soldiers
landed at Gallipoli ninety-four years ago,” Mr Holecek said.
“Its historical significance is therefore dependent on our youth to not
only understand the Anzac legend but to maintain its momentum for future
generations.”
Other youth groups to take part in this vigil included SES Cadets,
Noarlunga Venturer Scouts, Girl Guides Australia, Australian Air Force
Cadets, SA Police Ranges, Australian Navy Cadets and St John Ambulance
Cadets.
Easter bunny visits Morphett Vale CFS 12/4/09 The Easter Bunny made a surprise visit to the Morphett Vale brigade this morning, leaving behind hundreds of chocolate easter eggs for the children of brigade members. It was impossible to contain the smiles and happiness on the dozens of children as they raced through the fire station and surrounds locating their chocolate loot. The big kids were also well looked after with plenty of hot cross buns to go around. The Easter Egg hunt has become an annual event within the brigade and we wish to thank Cadbury Schweppes for their ongoing support.
Morphett Vale Fire-fighters deployed to Victoria 23/2/09 Three Morphett Vale CFS fire-fighters were today deployed as part of a South Australian Strike Team to assist in battling the ongoing large fires in Victoria. This follows on from the deployment of Morphett Vale Lieutenant Matt Bonser to Victoria on the 11 of February to the Churchill fire, west of Melbourne. The three crew deployed today are expected to be working on the Murrundindi fire, north west of Melbourne and being controlled from of Alexandra. It is anticipated that our crew will return to South Australia on Friday the 27th of February.
Morphett Vale receive two grants for Defibrillators 24/1/09 The Morphett Vale CFS brigade have been successful in receiving two grants to purchase Automatic External Defibrillators (AED's).The grants were provided through the State and Federal Governments from the Volunteer Support Fund and the FaHCSIA Volunteer Grants Program. The aim of the project was to enhance the first aid capabilities of the Morphett Vale brigade by purchasing an Automatic External Defibrillator to carry on our appliances. The addition of an AED will provide a further level of safety to our fire-fighters as well as extending our capability to provide first aid services to the public.
The increasing average age of volunteers in the Country Fire Service has also resulted in an increased risk of sudden cardiac failure amongst our members when undertaking arduous activity. Studies have found that when a person suffers a sudden cardiac arrest the chance of survival decreases by 10% for each minute that passes, up to 10,000 lives could be saved each year if defibrillators were widely used. Further AED and resuscitation training is to be conducted in the near future and once purchased the AED's will be stored on Morphett Vale 24P and Morphett Vale 24 for rapid deployment at incidents. Below is an article that featured in the Southern Times Messenger Newspaper this week.
Morphett Vale CFS Volunteer Recognised 26/12/08 Morphett Vale CFS volunteer Ian Taverner has been recognised for his outstanding community service and dedication to the Country Fire Service at a ceremony conducted by the Minister for Emergency Services, Michael Wright. Mr Wright awarded 14 South Australians with Emergency Service Medals while 18 received Ministerial Commendations. He said the recipients were awarded for their commitment to the Country Fire Service, Metropolitan Fire Service, State Emergency Service, Volunteer Marine Rescue, Surf Life Saving SA and the SA Ambulance Service. Mr Wright said recipients were recognised for their extraordinary efforts at incidents such as the 2008 Willunga fire, the ETSA Utilities sub-station fire, the Whyalla Airlines crash, a cliff rescue at Hallett Cove in 2007, and the rescue of a swimmer by a 16-year-old surf life saver. He said the awards reflected the exceptional acts of bravery and service that volunteers and staff had made to the Emergency Services Sector and to community safety. “While each and every member of the Emergency Services organisations deserves recognition for their contribution, these medals and commendations recognise those who have gone that extra mile in service to the community,” Mr Wright said. “Whether it involves rescuing someone from a bushfire, a cliff face or treacherous seas, or coming up with new and improved ways to better service and protect the community, these 32 individuals and groups have helped to build community resilience and make South Australia a safer place.” Mr Ian Taverner joined the Hackham Emergency Fire Service (EFS) unit in 1969, and quickly rose through the ranks to become a Station Officer within the Hackham unit. He has attended nearly all of the major deployments that the Noarlunga CFS and Mawson CFS groups have been involved in. He currently holds the position of Deputy Group Officer within the Mawson CFS Group and his dedication to the service and his willingness to spend weeks away from home fighting fires is unsurpassed. He was awarded the National Service Medal in 1985, and is a well respected life member of the Morphett Vale brigade.
'Bushfire Ready' Information Session held at Morphett Vale 5/12/08
More than fifty local residents attended a
Bushfire Ready Information Session conducted at the Morphett Vale fire
station on Tuesday the 2nd of December.
The 'Bushfire Ready' meetings are an awareness and information session for the general public. These meetings last 90 minutes and focus on the area's bushfire risk, bushfire behaviour, how to protect your house and property, personal safety, as well as bushfire action planning. A BBQ was also cooked by the Morphett Vale CFS members and local fire safety supplier Mercury Fire were on hand to offer advice on safety equipment for the house. Anyone seeking further information on these sessions should contact the CFS Community Education Unit on 8463 4082 or email community.ed@cfs.org.au
2008 Recruit Squad Graduates 4/9/08
Twelve members of the 2008 Morphett Vale CFS
recruit squad last night completed their training and graduated to
become fire-fighters. The recruits have spent the last three months
learning basic fire-fighting skills and understanding the tactics and
theories involved in responding to fires and emergencies.
Approximately fifty friends and family members of those graduating attended the event and watched as the recruits demonstrated some of the skills they have learnt, it also gave the visitors the opportunity to operate some of the equipment used by the CFS and learn a bit more about what their loved ones are doing.
Morphett Vale Animal Rescue 28/8/08
Shortly after 3am on Thursday the 28th of
August the Morphett Vale CFS brigade were responded to a report of a
puppy trapped in a drain.
Upon arrival at the Morphett Vale home CFS
volunteers found that a puppy had fallen into a drain and become stuck
about sixty centimetres beneath the ground. Fire-fighters could see the
head of the dog sticking through the pipe but were unable to release it
from the drain, in consultation with the owner of the house a plan was
formulated to dig out the entire concrete section surrounding the drain
and disassemble the PVC pipe-work where the dog was trapped.
Hand tools were used to break apart the
concrete surrounding the basin which allowed fire-fighters to dig down
the required depth to where the dog was located, the PVC pipe was then
broken apart and the puppy gently removed from the drain.
The puppy appeared shaken by the experience but not seriously injured.
Recruits nearing the completion of their training 14/8/08 The 2008 recruit squad is gearing up for their graduation. When the group of fourteen joined the brigade earlier in the year they knew very little about fire-fighting and dealing with emergency incidents, however three months of intensive training twice a week has resulted in them now being highly skilled and very proficient fire fighters. Their training has included practical and theory sessions on:
All recruits have also successfully completed a Basic Fire Fighter One training course conducted over three weekends. The graduation evening is scheduled for Wednesday the 3rd of September at the Morphett Vale fire station, families and friends of those participating as well as all Morphett Vale CFS members are all invited to attend the event.
Another busy year for the Morphett Vale brigade 6/7/08 At the conclusion of the 07/08 season the Morphett Vale brigade once again reported a very busy year. A total of 418 incidents were responded to by Morphett Vale CFS volunteers, again making the brigade one of the busiest in South Australia. More than 3700 person hours were contributed by our volunteers just responding to emergency incidents, this does include time spent training or attending other CFS activities. Some of the more noteworthy incidents over the last twelve months include; A significant deployment to Kangaroo Island involving approximately 10 Morphett Vale volunteers over a period of nearly two weeks A large fast moving scrub fire at Willunga in which one house was destroyed A large grass fire impacting on property in the Brownhill Creek area As well as responding to approximately 71 rural fires the brigade also attended 32 building fires, 67 vehicle accidents, 29 vehicle fires and 85 fire alarms. It is clear that without the dedication and commitment from the volunteers of the Morphett Vale CFS brigade that the community would suffer a considerable loss, well done to all of the volunteers who freely commit their time to make the Morphett Vale brigade the highly regarded and well respected organisation it is today.
Morphett Vale CFS volunteers make headlines 20/3/08 Members of the Morphett Vale brigade were again in the paper this week following the serious fire at Willunga on Thursday the 13/3/08. The Morphett Vale brigade responded to the incident in Morphett Vale 24 following a request for assistance from the Kyeema Group. In searing temperatures and gusty winds the Morphett Vale crew were immediately sent to work defending properties from the fast moving fire. Other Morphett Vale volunteers assisted in the Incident Management Team established at Willunga and at the staging area. During the height of the blaze one house was lost and two CFS appliances were caught in a burn-over. Volunteers from Morphett Vale relieved their day shift colleagues at around 10pm that evening and worked through the night to contain the fire. Hard work by those night shift crews resulted in the fire remaining contained during the extreme fire weather conditions on Friday the 14th of March. The fire burnt through 153 hectares of grass and scrub, injured nine fire fighters and destroyed one house.
Floating pump now operational 13/2/08 The Morphett Vale CFS brigade in conjunction with the SGIC Insurance company recently purchased a portable floating pump for use at emergency incidents.
The Waterous floto pump is stored on Morphett Vale 14, this allows for rapid deployment to emergency incidents. Once it is running it will deliver 1000 litres of water in approximately 2 minutes, this means that appliances needing water can be re-filled much faster than previously. Its small size also allows for the pump to be deployed in areas that conventional fire fighting pumps could not previously access. The pump also has a significant use at flooding related incidents. Since recently purchasing the pump it has already been used with great effect at a large bushfire in the Brownhill Creek Conservation Park. The pump was setup in a nearby swimming pool and re-filled fire appliances as required. It is expected that this piece of equipment will benefit the Morphett Vale brigade for many years to come. The Morphett Vale brigade wish to gratefully acknowledge the support given by SGIC in their support for this project.
Morphett Vale crews return from Kangaroo Island 21/12/07 Crews from Morphett Vale CFS have now returned home after fighting fires on Kangaroo Island. The first deployment occurred on the 6/12/07 after a severe lightning storm passed over the island igniting several fires. Fanned by strong hot winds the fires burned very quickly and assistance was soon requested from mainland fire crews. Morphett Vale 24 departed the station early on the morning of the 7/12/07 with four crew to assist. For the following week and a half Morphett Vale crews responded to the island to relieve weary fire fighters battling the blazes. Crews were actively involved in asset protection and back burning in an effort to control the fires. A base camp was established at Parndana where more than 500 firefighters were housed and fed, with fire crews from most states in Australia responding to assist. A combination of good fire fighting and fortunate weather conditions allowed most fire crews to stand down from Sunday the 16/12/07 with Morphett Vale 24 returning to station on the 18/12/07. In total 90,000 ha of land was burnt during the fires.
2008 Calendar Now Available 14/11/07 The 2008 Morphett Vale CFS calendar is now available to purchase The calendar features dozens of high quality images taken at training sessions and incidents attended by the brigade. It has the start and finish dates for all South Australian (S.A.) school terms as well as all S.A. public holidays. It is printed on durable gloss paper to ensure the pictures always look fantastic. Calendars can be purchased for $10 from the fire station on Monday evenings or one can be posted to you for $13 by contacting the Operations Support Coordinator - Kate Pilkington.
2007 Recruits graduate 1/11/07 After three months of intensive training the 2007 Morphett Vale CFS recruit squad graduated on Wednesday the 31st of October. The graduation event was a chance for the families and friends to attend the station and witness for themselves what their partners or loved ones had been doing for the last three months. After a short talk and video, the recruits displayed their new skills in front of the crowd during various drills. The friends and family were also given the opportunity to squirt some water and have a look at some of the equipment carried on our appliances. Everyone present was very impressed with the amount the recruits had learnt in three months and the high level of skill they showed throughout the drills.
Quiz night a huge success 28/10/07 The Morphett Vale brigade held a quiz night on Saturday the 27th of October. The event was held next door to the fire station at the Hackham Community Sports and Social Club, as well as being a great fundraiser it also gave us the opportunity to launch the 2008 brigade calendar. The evening was a huge success with everyone having a good night and most people walking away with prizes of some sort or goods from the auction. Thank you to all those businesses that sponsored the event with goods and services, without you the evening would not have been possible. Calendars are for sale for $10, if you are interested in purchasing one you contact the brigade on 8382 8489 or via email to Kate Pilkington
Recruits half way through training 7/9/07 The 2007 recruit squad have now reached the half way point of their training. In the past six weeks they have learnt to identify fire fighting equipment, roll and bowl hoses, handle charged hoses and branches, operate various pumps, source water and sink a standpipe, climb ladders, operate CFS radios as well as how to maintain various pieces of equipment on the appliances. Numerous wet and dry drills have given the recruits the chance to put the theory into a practical test with everyone doing extremely well. Two recruits have already completed their Basic Firefighter Course with the rest set to undertake it in mid October. It is anticipated that all recruits will graduate to be operational firefighters in November.
2007 Recruits begin training 22/7/07 The Morphett Vale CFS recruits of 2007 have now begun their training. This years recruit squad includes 12 enthusiastic people keen to learn the skill of firefighting and eager to become involved in the Morphett Vale CFS brigade. They will attend regular training on Monday nights, as well as a recruit training session held every Wednesday night for the first three months. The recruit training program includes sessions on;
The in house training program is a pathway to the successful completion of the Basic Firefighter 1 course which will be held in October.
Donation with a difference 2/4/07 Morphett Vale received an unusual donation today, a Hazard Systems lightbar and siren worth $3000 was generously given to the brigade. The equipment was donated by Mr Rene Vanderlee of Huntfield Heights who had previously used the lights and siren as part of a private ambulance service. As he is moving interstate the equipment was no longer needed and he decided to pass it on to us. At this stage is not known what we will do with the lightbar, but it will be put to good use somewhere by the brigade.
Lightning strike makes the paper 17/3/07 After attending a small grass fire on Monday the 5th of March at the Wilfred Taylor Reserve in Morphett Vale, the Southern Times Messenger newspaper featured an article on the incident in the paper on the 14th of March. The fire was started after a lightning strike on a tree in the reserve near Wheatsheaf road on the night of Friday, March the 2nd. The fire remained contained to a tree until the warm weather and gusty winds spread it into nearby grass on Monday the 5th. Nearby horse riders noticed the smoke and quickly notified emergency services. CFS volunteers from Morphett Vale and Happy Valley extinguished the fire and contained it to less than 500sq meters of bush and grass.
Onkaparinga Councilors visit Morphett Vale station 5/3/07 As part of the process of reforming links with the Onkaparinga City Council the Morphett Vale brigade invited local councilors to the station for an information night and hands on training session. Approximately 10 councilors as well as the Mayor attended the evening. As part of the information session they learnt about the functions of the Morphett Vale CFS, Training undertaken by volunteers, Incident Management and they type of equipment the CFS use. They then had a look at the appliances as well as gaining some hands on experience using hoses and branches. All in attendance commented on how much they had learned about the CFS and that they found they evening extremely beneficial.
Morphett Vale CFS Annual Beach Night 29/1/07 The Annual CFS beach night was held on our training night this week. As is the tradition in January we packed up the appliances and head to Christies Beach for a night of surf, sand and beach games. After a quick jog to the surf club and back to warm up it was into the volleyball and beach cricket, as well as a swim for those that were keen. We're not sure who won the Volleyball but the Captain assures us his team scored the most points without cheating. The beach cricket was also popular with many budding Warne's and McGrath's keen to show off what they can do. As the pictures show it was another good night and all who attended enjoyed themselves. Another Major fire for Morphett Vale 17/1/07 After coming off the busiest month ever recorded in the brigade (44 calls for December) the members were hoping January would be relatively quiet. Unfortunately it wasn't to be, with a major fire starting at 1800 hrs near Mount Bold on Wednesday the 10th. Morphett Vale crews had already been busy that afternoon attending an alarm call, and two grass fires, we had just returned from Pine road at Woodcroft when we were responded to Mount Bold. Under extreme fire weather conditions crews were immediately dispatched to protect houses around the Kangarilla area, the fire was burning in patches of thick scrub and then coming out into open grassland, in some cases it was moving faster than appliances could keep up with it. Within one hour the fire had already covered nearly 800 hectares. A south west wind change at around 1900 hrs then pushed the fire around the back of Mount Bold towards sections of the Kuitpo Forest and the township of Echunga. Fortunately the wind dropped in the evening and crews were able to start back burning ahead of the fire and develop some control lines. Morphett Vale 24, 24P and 14 crews all worked extremely hard and managed to save a number of houses, the weary crews returned to the station around 0300 hrs Wednesday morning. After a few hours sleep our fire fighters were again on the fire ground on Wednesday afternoon, by Wednesday night the fire was contained and mopping up had begun. An Incident Management Team was established very early in the fire at the Morphett Vale fire station, it remained the control centre for the incident until Sunday evening when the majority of crews had been stood down. Great work by many fire fighters from around the state meant that only two houses and a number of sheds were lost in the fire, in the early part of the incident there was an estimated 60 houses under threat around Kangarilla. The fire burnt 2000 hectares of scrub as well as some pine plantation in Kuitpo Forest but overall it was a good save by fire fighters.

Major fire keeps Morphett Vale busy 10/12/06 A large fire that started on Tuesday the 5th of December has kept Morphett Vale CFS volunteers busy throughout the week. The fire started in the Onkaparinga National Park near the Sundews track around 3pm on Tuesday, northerly winds pushed the fire through the Onkaparinga Gorge and by 5pm it had jumped the river and burnt strongly up the southern side of the park. Up to 450 firefighters from the CFS, DEH and MFS fought to bring the blaze under control and protect properties near Blewitt Springs. The fire burnt 205 hectares of bush and scrub in the National Park however there was no property losses or damage. CFS and DEH volunteers were kept busy throughout the week dealing with a number of small flare ups and maintaining a constant patrol of the fire area. Another grass fire burnt approximately one hectare of grass on Piggott Range road near the Onkaparinga National Park at Old Noarlunga on Friday, crews from a number of nearby brigades responded to the incident and quickly extinguished the fire before it could extend too far into the National Park.

Morphett Vale CFS Xmas Day 3/12/06 This years family Christmas day was held at the Morphett Vale fire station on Sunday the 3rd of December. Although some members were away on a Strike Team and others were occupied with a Level 3 training course we still had approximately eighty adults and children attend the day. Everyone that attended enjoyed the great food and all the children were very excited to receive a special visit from Santa. The warm sunny weather also made the 'Slip n Slide' popular with the children. A big thank you to all those involved in organising another great event.
Federal Minister visits Morphett Vale CFS 24/10/06 The Federal Minister for Workforce Participation the Hon Dr Sharman Stone MP visited the Morphett Vale CFS Station on Tuesday the 24th of October. Mission Australia has been coordinating a 'Work for the Dole' program at various CFS stations for the past six months, currently the Morphett Vale Station is the focus of their attention. The 'Work for the Dole' participants are involved on Mondays and Tuesdays with various projects around the station grounds. Some of the work undertaken so far includes; landscaping, fencing, tree planting and painting. It is anticipated that the current project will run until February with the group consisting of around 20 people. Minister Stone visited the participants of this program as part of her tour of South Australia, she talked to those involved with the program as well as firefighters from the Morphett Vale brigade about the benefits of the scheme. Local MP Kym Richardson was also in attendance and supplied a BBQ lunch for those involved.
Fire Season begins in South Australia 19/10/06 The continuing dry conditions have prompted the Country Fire Service to bring forward the start of the Fire Danger Season to the 15th of October for all districts. This is six weeks earlier than usual for the Mount Lofty Ranges. Grass curing levels throughout the Morphett Vale CFS response area is now nearly entirely at 100%. This is very early for this area as normally the grasses do not cure fully until early January. Due to the dryness of the fuels and some very hot days with strong northerly winds many CFS brigades have already been busy with fires. The Morphett Vale brigade has already deployed two crews on Strike Teams to Kangaroo Island for a large fire burning on the western end of the island in the Mount Taylor area. Crews have also been busy with fires locally, the largest was on Thursday the 12th of October when one hectare of scrub and bush in the Onkaparinga National Park was burnt. Members of the public are reminded that during the Fire Danger Season burning off is not permitted without a permit, for more information have a look at the Burning Off page on this website.
Residents urged to prepare for bushfires now 21/9/06 After the driest Winter ever recorded in Adelaide residents are urged to start preparing their properties for bushfires now. Although the fire season is still officially set to start on the 1st of December, the lack of significant rain and recent warm conditions have meant that grass and bushfires are likely to be occurring much earlier than in previous years Soil moisture levels in some forest areas are currently as low as you would expect to see in the middle of summer, this means that fires will burn easier and hotter in these areas. People should take some simple precautions around their property to prepare for fires.
Residents in the Onkaparinga City Council area are reminded that a permit is required from the council before any burning off can take place, enquiries about permits can be made to the council Fire Prevention Officer on 8384 0730 . During the Fire Danger Season a permit to burn can only be obtained from the CFS. Morphett Vale CFS in the paper again 22/8/06 Following on from last weeks spectacular truck rollover on Main South Road, the Messenger newspaper this week featured a photograph and article on the incident. As you can see Morphett Vale CFS Volunteers feature prominently in the picture.
Busy afternoon for Morphett Vale 18/8/06 Four calls in four hours kept Morphett Vale CFS volunteers busy on Friday the 18th of August. The first incident was a House Fire at Woodcroft reported at 12:33pm. Morphett Vale 24P and Morphett Vale 24 responded to this incident and found a fire in one bedroom of a single story house. The fire was quickly extinguished with the assistance of the Metropolitan Fire Service and the Happy Valley CFS. Morphett Vale fire fighters then remained on scene for two hours whilst Fire Cause Investigators tried to determine a cause for the fire. Estimated damage to the home is $25,000.
At 14:45, whilst returning from the House Fire, the Morphett Vale 24P crew were responded to a Motor Vehicle Accident on Main South road at Morphett Vale. Upon arrival crews found a large dump truck had fallen off a trailer and landed on top of a car, trapping the driver. CFS volunteers worked with MFS and Ambulance crews to extricate the trapped person and make the area safe.
At the same time as the Vehicle Accident was unfolding another call was received for a gas bottle on fire at Morphett Vale. A crew standing by at the Morphett Vale Fire station responded to this incident and extinguished a fire from a leaking gas cylinder. Not long after all appliances had returned to the station a call was received at 16:11 for a Shed Fire at Onkaparinga Hills. Morphett Vale 24P and Morphett Vale 24 responded to this incident and found a shed with heavy smoke issuing from it. Two firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus entered the shed and extinguished the fire, damage is estimated at $15,000.
Morphett Vale Volunteers in the 'Sunday Mail' 16/7/06 Morphett Vale CFS firefighters; Chris Record, Marcin Bal and Brendan Tiernan were featured in the Sunday Mail newspaper today. The Sunday Mail are key sponsors of the City to Bay fun run and the Morphett Vale CFS brigade has assisted the with the organisation of the event for the past four years. The article in the Sunday Mail featured interviews with our firefighters as well as a photo with a member of the S.A. Police Department and St John Ambulance.
Gas tank explodes in car fire 24/6/06 Just after 1am on the 24th of June the Morphett Vale CFS and Christie Downs MFS were responded to a reported house fire on Gates road at Hackham. Upon arriving in the area crews could see a fire visible on Piggott Range road, further investigation revealed a stolen car had been set alight on the side of the road. The vehicle had an L.P.G. tank in the boot which had exploded, this resulted in an extreme displacement of the roof. This type of explosion is normally referred to as a B.L.E.V.E (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion). Crews were on scene for approximately 30 minutes.
Morphett Vale East Primary School Visit 21/6/06 Morphett Vale 24P visited the Morphett Vale East Primary School on Wednesday the 21st of June. Approximately 60 year 2, 3 and 4 students listened to a fire safety talk and then had the chance to squirt some water and look over the appliance.
Mawson Group Equipment Night 19/6/06 The Morphett Vale brigade again hosted the annual Mawson Group Equipment Night on Monday June 19th. The event is an opportunity for members of CFS brigades to have a look at different types of equipment and appliances in use within the fire service. It's also a chance to liaise with other agencies and have a look at what equipment they carry. A number of equipment suppliers also attended the event to demonstrate new products they have. A demonstration of the Blackwood CFS Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) appliance also took place with a simulated car fire drill in the car park. Nearly two hundred personnel attended the event with most people commenting on what a great night it was.
Two car fires and a skate board 18/6/06 Saturday night saw Morphett Vale CFS assist the Seaford brigade at two cars and a skateboard fire. The first call came just after 10:00pm to a car fire on Barytes road at Old Noarlunga. When CFS crews arrived they found the stolen utility had been driven into a gate to the Onkaparinga National Park and set alight. Seaford 24P and Morphett Vale 24P arrived and began extinguishing the fire, however shortly after arriving another call was received for a rubbish fire at the skate park on Grand Boulevard at Seaford. Morphett Vale 24P responded to this incident and arrived to find a skateboard that had been reduced to a pile of ashes. The third incident occurred at 01:22 when Seaford and Morphett Vale were again responded to a car fire in the Onkaparinga National Park. This time a stolen car had been dumped and set alight near the Onkaparinga River at Seaford Meadows. Crews were on scene for approximately 30 minutes extinguishing the car and a small grass / tree fire.
Road Crash Rescue Training 29/5/06 Morphett Vale this week attended the Seaford CFS station to conduct Road Crash Rescue training. Crews were initially briefed on the basic roles of the CFS at vehicle accidents before conducting some practical training outside. Firefighters practiced stabilisation of vehicles on their wheels and on their sides as well as glass management techniques and the use of hydraulic rescue tools. All members had the opportunity to conduct each of the drills and everyone indicated the training exercise was very beneficial. Thank you to Jason Carroll, Mark Grocke and all the other members of the Seaford CFS who assisted.
Morphett Vale 24 refurbishment 27/5/06 Stage one of the refurbishment of Morphett Vale 24 was completed today when new striping was added to the vehicle. Recently the brigade discovered that the 12 year old vehicle was not due to be replaced in the near future and a decision was made to make some repairs and alterations to bring the appearance back to a high standard. The second stage of the project involves some body work repairs as well the 'acid washing' of the appliance tray and crew area. This is expected to be completed in approximately three weeks.
Railway training night 16/5/06 This weeks training involved a combined session with members of the Seaford CFS brigade at the Lonsdale railcar depot. Members were taken through the passenger trains by Trans-Adelaide staff and shown where important isolation points and safety features are located. It was a beneficial night with everyone learning something about the trains that run throughout our city.
House Fire at Morphett Vale 8/5/06 Just as firefighters were about to begin training this morning a call was received for a house fire at Morphett Vale. Within four minutes of receiving the job our crews arrived to find a fire in a bedroom and starting to extend throughout the house. CFS crews wearing Breathing Apparatus, as well as MFS firefighters contained the fire to the bedroom and a bathroom. The occupants of the house were not home at the time of the blaze and investigators believe an electrical fault may be the cause.
Vehicle Accident at Hackham 5/5/06 A lucky escape for this driver as his vehicle collided with a median strip and then rolled down an embankment into a backyard on Main South Road at Hackham late this afternoon. CFS crews assisted the MFS with stabilising the vehicle and stood by while it was removed from the area.
Easter Egg Hunt 16/4/06 Easter morning saw a surprise visit by the Easter Bunny to the Morphett Vale CFS station. On his travels he managed to stop off and leave hundreds of chocolate Easter eggs for the kids. Children of all ages joined in the fun of finding the eggs spread through the station with no one going home empty handed. The brigade would like to thank Cadbury Schweppes for the donation of the eggs and brigade member Susan Wood for coming up with the idea.
2nd Alarm Factory Blaze 9/4/06 After nearly two weeks with barely a fire call the silence was broken on Sunday morning at around 12:30am when the Morphett Vale and Seaford CFS brigades were responded to a factory fire at Lonsdale. Morphett Vale 24P was the third arriving appliance on the scene and found a shed approximately 30m x 50m well involved in fire. CFS crews immediately began assisting the two MFS crews with hose lines and B.A. operators to extinguish the deep seated fire. The second alarm response brought MFS appliances from O'Halloran Hill, Camden Park, St Marys and Adelaide, at the height of the blaze over 60 firefighters were involved at the incident. The factory involved was a manufacturer of 'stubby holders' and crews had difficulty extinguishing the large amounts of neoprene involved.
